“The most important word in my work is ‘Esprit’ ” Guillaume Féau

Magic Act

In France, Guillaume Féau restores and copies magnificient antique boiseries – carved paneling – that can transform any room. By Sabine Rothman. Photographed by Robert Polidori.

“The most important word in my work is ‘Esprit’ ” says Guillaume Féau.

“When you have that in a room, you win.” In its simpliest translation, the word means spirit. But it can encompass so much more: soul, character, reason, vivacity, wit, ingenuity, will, genius, and phantoms, all of which come into play in Féau’s business, boiserie (translation: carved-wood wall paneling; sounds better in French, doesn’t it?).
